Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
When you first open the app, you'll go through a short onboarding flow where you enter your name, date of birth, sex, height, and weight. This information is used to calculate personalized calorie and nutrition targets. You can update your profile at any time from the Settings screen.
Gym Companion Coach supports both metric (kg, cm) and imperial (lbs, inches) units. You can switch between them at any time in Settings. The app stores all data internally in metric and converts for display based on your preference.
Yes. Your data syncs directly between your iPhone and Apple Watch over Bluetooth using WatchConnectivity. Make sure both devices are paired and within range. No iCloud is needed for watch sync.
Workouts
From the home screen, tap "Start Workout." If you have a training schedule set up, the app suggests today's workout automatically. You can also start a flex workout and pick exercises manually. During the workout, the app guides you through each exercise with sets, reps, and rest timers.
Yes. Rest timer duration can be adjusted in the workout settings. The timer starts automatically between sets and you can skip it or extend it at any time during your workout.
Go to Settings and tap "Training Schedule." You can choose from preset schedule templates (like Push/Pull/Legs, Upper/Lower, or Full Body) or create a custom schedule. Assign muscle groups or specific workouts to each day of the week.
The app includes a catalog of 60+ common gym exercises covering strength, cardio, and class-based workouts. Each exercise tracks the appropriate data — sets, reps, and weight for strength exercises; duration for cardio and classes. You can also create custom exercises.
Apple Watch
The watch app installs automatically when you install Gym Companion Coach on your iPhone. If it doesn't appear, open the Watch app on your iPhone, find Gym Companion Coach, and tap Install. See our Apple Watch guide for details.
Yes. Open the app on your Apple Watch and tap Start Workout. If you have a training schedule, the watch shows today's planned workout. Heart rate and calories are tracked automatically during the session.
Make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are paired and within Bluetooth range. All data syncs directly between devices via WatchConnectivity. Try opening the app on both devices to trigger a sync, or restart both devices.
Nutrition
Take a photo of your meal and tap the analysis button. The image is sent securely to our server, which uses AI to identify the food and estimate calories, protein, fat, and carbs. You can review and adjust the values before saving. See our AI Food Recognition guide for details.
Your daily calorie target is based on your age, sex, height, weight, activity level, and fitness goal (cut, bulk, or maintain). The app uses standard metabolic rate formulas to calculate a personalized recommendation. You can view and adjust these targets in Settings.
Yes. Any meal you log can be saved as a favorite for quick reuse. Saved meals appear in your meal logging flow, so you can log frequently eaten meals with a single tap instead of re-entering the information each time.
Yes. You can scan product barcodes to look up nutritional information from the built-in food database. Point your camera at the barcode and the app will search for a match automatically.
AI Insights
After you complete a workout, the app automatically sends your training and nutrition data to an AI model for analysis. The AI reviews your session in context of your recent history — workouts, meals, and body weight over the past 4 weeks — and provides personalized feedback with optional schedule adjustments. See our AI Workout Insights guide for details.
AI insights need enough data to be meaningful. The feature activates after you've logged at least 6 workout sessions and 7 days of meals within a 28-day window. You'll see a progress card on the home screen showing how close you are to unlocking insights. Make sure AI Insights is enabled in Settings.
Free users receive 5 AI insights per month. The counter resets on the 1st of each month. Premium users get full access with no monthly cap. You can see your remaining count in Settings under AI Insights.
When the AI suggests adjustments — like increasing a weight or reducing rest time — you'll see an "Apply Changes to Schedule" button. Tapping it updates your training schedule so the new values are used next time you do that workout. You can always change them manually afterward. The button is only available for 7 days after the insight is generated.
Your age, weight, height, sex, fitness goal, activity level, training schedule, 28 days of workout sessions (sets, reps, weights), 28 days of meal data (calories and macros), and body weight trend. Your name, photos, Apple ID, and device information are never sent. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
