Apple Watch Guide
Everything you need to know about using Gym Companion Coach on your Apple Watch
1. Requirements
The Apple Watch companion is a premium feature that requires an active subscription. To use it, you need:
- An active Gym Companion Coach Premium subscription
- Apple Watch Series 6 or later
- watchOS 10.0 or later
- iPhone with iOS 17.0 or later, paired with your Apple Watch
- Gym Companion Coach installed on your iPhone
2. Installing the Watch App
The Gym Companion Coach watch app is installed automatically when you install the iPhone app, as long as "Automatic App Install" is enabled on your Apple Watch.
If the watch app doesn't appear automatically:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone
- Scroll down to find Gym Companion Coach
- Tap Install
Once installed, you'll see the Gym Companion Coach icon on your Apple Watch home screen.
3. Starting a Workout
You can start a workout directly from your Apple Watch:
- Open Gym Companion Coach on your Apple Watch
- The home screen shows your scheduled workout for today (if you have a training schedule set up on your iPhone)
- Tap Start Workout to begin
- The watch guides you through each exercise, tracking sets, reps, and rest periods
- Heart rate is monitored continuously during the workout
- Active calories burned are tracked in real time
You can also start a workout from your iPhone — the watch will automatically display the active workout session and track heart rate data.
4. Syncing Data
All data syncs directly between your iPhone and Apple Watch over WatchConnectivity — no iCloud required for the watch.
- Schedule & exercises: Your training schedule and exercise catalog are sent from your iPhone to the watch automatically so your planned workout is ready when you open the app.
- Live session sync: During an active workout, real-time data (current exercise, sets completed, rest timers, heart rate) is synced bidirectionally between devices. You can control the workout from either device.
- Completed workouts: When a workout finishes, the watch sends all set data back to the iPhone for permanent storage. If the phone is unreachable, the data is queued and transferred when the devices reconnect.
For sync to work, make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are paired and within Bluetooth range.
5. Troubleshooting
The watch app won't install
- Check that your Apple Watch meets the minimum requirements (Series 6+, watchOS 10+)
- Ensure your iPhone and Apple Watch are paired and nearby
- Try restarting both your iPhone and Apple Watch
- Open the Watch app on iPhone → Gym Companion Coach → Install
Workout data isn't syncing
- Ensure your iPhone and Apple Watch are paired and within Bluetooth range
- Try opening the app on both devices to trigger a sync
- Restart both your iPhone and Apple Watch
- If you completed a workout while the phone was unreachable, the data will transfer automatically the next time the devices connect
Heart rate isn't showing during workouts
- Make sure the watch is worn snugly on your wrist
- Check that Gym Companion Coach has permission to read heart rate: iPhone → Settings → Health → Data Access → Gym Companion Coach
- Clean the sensor area on the back of your Apple Watch
